Dr. Jill Biden, the second lady of the
United States, will open Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians
and Gays' (PFLAG) annual National Convention on Friday.
According to the White House, Biden, a
lifelong educator, will discuss “the Obama-Biden Administration's
commitment to ensuring that every student has a safe school.”
Biden will address the group at 1:30PM
at the 4-day event, which takes place at the Westin Alexandria hotel
in Washington, D.C.
“As a teacher and a mom, I know that
acceptance and support at home can lead to positive and healthy
outcomes in every important area of life, including education, mental
health and physical health,” Biden said in a statement. “When
parents and educators work together as a team, children succeed and
thrive, and I commend PFLAG for the important role they play in the
lives of our students.”
“We look forward to welcoming Dr.
Biden and hearing her speak out as an ally about the important role
that families and family acceptance play in providing a great
education and a supportive community to our youth and how, when
partnered with educators, friends, allies, and LGBT people
themselves, families are an unstoppable force for change,” said
PFLAG National Executive Director Jody Huckaby.
