Bevan Dufty, an openly gay San
Francisco mayoral candidate, released on Tuesday his first campaign
ad, which features his five-year-old daughter Sidney Maely Goldfader
Dufty.
In Someplace New, Dufty and
daughter are seen riding the city's subway (the San Francisco
Municipal Railway or MUNI).
“I ride MUNI every day,” Dufty is
heard saying in the 30-second ad. “I enjoy it most when I'm with
Sidney. She doesn't notice that it's too crowded or that it can run
a half-hour late.”
“Sidney thinks MUNI is magic,” he
adds. “We go underground and come out someplace new. Just us. I
want all of us to see it that way.” (The video is embedded in the
right panel of this page.)
According to the Huffington Post,
the ad is groundbreaking in showing an openly gay candidate with
his/her child.
Dufty has served two terms on the San
Francisco Board of Supervisors representing the same district Harvey
Milk, one of America's first openly gay elected officials, did in the
late 1970s. His bid for mayor has the endorsement of the Gay &
Lesbian Victory Fund. If elected, Dufty would become San Francisco's
first openly gay mayor.
