Actor Freddie Smith says he is honored
to play gay on the NBC daytime soap Days Of Our Lives.
Smith went from playing gay on the CW
teen drama 90210 to
playing Days' first gay character.
Smith's Marco was introduced as a
romantic interest to Trevor Donovan's all American Teddy on 90210
during the second half of the show's third season. But Donovan
will not return to West Beverly Hills High next year as a regular,
which most likely means the end of Smith's Marco.
Smith's Sonny Kiriakis arrived in Salem
on Thursday, June 23.
In an interview with gay glossy
Frontiers in LA, Smith said he was honored to play the part.
“I feel honored that they would give
me the opportunity to portray their first gay role after 45 years of
being on the air,” Smith said. “I'm very excited to bring this
character to life.”
The
openly straight actor added: “I truly believe that every person
has the right to be who they want to be, love who they want to love.
I'm excited to play a complex character like Sonny and to inspire
conversation within and between both the gay and straight communities
about my character.”
