Actor Neil Patrick Harris says he and
David Burtka are engaged, but not planning a wedding.
Harris, who stars as womanizer Barney
on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, and Burtka welcomed
fraternal twins, Harper and Gideon, last October.
As New York's gay marriage law faced
its final hurdle in the state Senate, Harris tweeted to his more than
1.5 million followers that he would “sure love to get married,”
prompting speculation that he and Burtka were planning to wed.
“Please, New York Senate, vote in
favor of marriage equality today,” he messaged. “My family would
really appreciate it.”
Speaking
to Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen, Harris denied
the couple was planning a wedding.
“We have no plans to [marry],”
Harris said. “I mean we've had rings on our right hands for five
years. We proposed to each other separately, at different times, ages
ago. We were going to get married in California, then that sort of
Prop 8 happened. And we have contemplated it here [in New York].”
“But the problem is, if you say like
'Yes, we're planning a wedding,' then it becomes a big giant thing.
We're certainly not planning a wedding but think it's amazing that
800 and some odd people got married yesterday,” he added.
