Zach Wahls, the college student who stood up for his two-mom family at the Iowa Legislature, has recorded a video wishing all moms a happy Mother's Day.

Wahls was one of the hundreds of people in February who testified at an Iowa House hearing considering a measure that sought to constitutionally ban gay and lesbian couples from marriage, civil unions, and domestic partnerships.

The University of Iowa student told lawmakers that the sense of family comes “from the commitment we make to each other” not the legal recognition offered by the government. Video of his testimony went viral on YouTube.

“I've got two moms myself,” Wahls says in his 51-second message. “And it's because of organizations like One Iowa, Lambda Legal that they've been able to have their loving, stable relationship recognized by the state of Iowa.”

“So as a member of the community at large, with my younger sister, and both my moms, we all want to wish you a very happy Mother's Day,” he adds. (The video is embedded in the right panel of this page.)
