MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell suggested
conservative celebrity Glenn Beck and Wisconsin Representative Paul
Ryan are gay on Tuesday night's episode of The Last Word With
Lawrence O'Donnell.
During the show's opening montage, Beck
and Ryan are heard exchanging I love yous over images of a marriage
ceremony. “The Republican budget plan softens Glenn Beck's
feelings about gay marriage,” O'Donnell says before the two men
exchanged their sentiments.
“To some, O'Donnell's crack may seem
like nothing more than a juvenile schoolyard insult, which is likely
how he intended it, but what he's doing there is using the
implication that Ryan and Beck are gay as an insult,” Tommy
Christopher wrote in an op-ed published on Mediaite.com.
“It's bad enough when anyone engages
in this behavior, but when it's a liberal, their status as supposed
allies to this community makes the offense that much worse, and the
betrayal that much more acute.”
“O'Donnell should apologize,”
Christopher added.
Beck, who
rankled social conservatives last year when he said that he was OK
with gay marriage, denied in January that
his new book The
7: Seven Wonders That Will Change Your Life
is a “gay parenting handbook.”
