Malaysian radio stations have de-gayed
Lady Gaga's hit single Born This Way,
labeling it offensive.
According
to numerous reports, radio stations have garbled Lady Gaga singing,
“No matter gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgendered life, I'm on
the right track, baby.”
“The
particular lyrics in Born This Way
may be considered offensive when viewed against Malaysia's social and
religious observances,” said the country's top private radio
operator AMP Radio Networks.
“The
issue of being gay, lesbian or [bisexual] is still considered as a
'taboo' by general Malaysians,” the company said in a statement.
Broadcasters
face fines and other penalties for breaking government censorship
rules that strictly prohibit the promotion of being gay.
Last
year, rocker
Adam Lambert agreed to alter a performance of his Glam Nation Tour
at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil, near Kuala Lumpur, after
members of the Pan Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) demanded its
cancellation, saying the performance promotes “the gay
lifestyle.”
Sexual
relationships between members of the same sex are outlawed in
Malaysia. People convicted of gay sex face possible fines, long
prison sentences and even corporal punishment.
