Oprah Winfrey's nascent cabler OWN has
acquired the Chaz Bono documentary Becoming Chaz,
DeadlineHollywood.com
first reported.
The film focuses on Bono's gender
reassignment and will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Park
City, Utah on Sunday, January 23.
The 41-year-old Bono, who was born
Chastity Bono to gay idol Cher and the late entertainer-politician
Sonny Bono, announced last June that he was eight months into gender
reassignment.
Writing at his blog ChazBono.net,
Bono called on people to “Do what is right for you.”
“I wasted years worried about what
other people would think if I transitioned, and now I wish I had
those years back,” he wrote.
Appearing on Good Morning America,
he said: “I feel so much more comfortable than I've ever been.
I've felt male as far back as I can remember.”
Bono's entire female to male transition
is expected to take four to five years.
Filmmakers Fenton Bailey and Randy
Barbato also produced The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Party Monster
and Inside Deep Throat.
Bono will appear at the film's
premiere.
