Openly
lesbian Jane Lynch and gay-inclusive hits Glee and
Modern Family took home top
awards Saturday at the 26th
Annual Television Critics Awards.
TCA
members gathering in Beverly Hills honored Lynch with their
Individual Achievement in Comedy award. It was one of the multiple
awards given to Fox's musical comedy hit Glee,
which stars Lynch as coach Sue Sylvester.
The
200-plus professional TV critics association also honored Glee
with Program of the Year and Outstanding New Program.
Not only are two of
the show's stars openly gay – Lynch and Chris Colfer – but the
show's character of Kurt Hummel (played by Colfer) is a gay student
at McKinley High.
Another
television program with both openly gay actors and characters is
ABC's American Family,
which won the Outstanding Achievement in Comedy award.
Openly gay Jesse
Tyler Ferguson plays gay dad Mitchell Pritchett on the Sunday night
comedy.
Lynch,
Colfer and Ferguson are among the seven openly gay stars to be
nominated for Emmy Awards, which will be handed out on Sunday,
August 29.
