A majority of people responding to a 60
Minutes/Vanity Fair survey say they would support an openly
gay president of the United States.
When asked “Would you support or
oppose having an openly gay person serve” as president, 50% of
respondents answered they would support, while 44% said they would
oppose.
Pollsters asked the question in
connection to 5 visible positions: president, Supreme Court justice,
secretary of state, commissioner of baseball and Super Bowl
quarterback.
The survey found support for openly gay
sports figures to be greater than for politicians. A large majority of
respondents said they would support an openly gay Super Bowl
quarterback (62%) and commissioner of baseball (61%).
Fifty-five percent of respondents said
they would support an openly gay Supreme Court justice, while 56%
agreed with a gay person holding the position of secretary of state.
The poll was conducted between February
26 – March 1 and has a 3 percent margin of error.
