British actor Russell Tovey said in a recent interview that coming out gay was the best thing that ever happened to him.

Tovey, 35, told the Evening Standard that he first realized he was gay at the age of 14, saying that he related to the gay characters in Beautiful Thing.

“I was watching the film of Beautiful Thing on TV,” Tovey said. “My mum came in and I turned it off and when she went to bed I turned it back on. I remember thinking, 'OK, that's it.' It's like someone had put their hand on mine and said, 'There you go.' It's a love story with a happy ending. It's good to have role models and now there are so many more.”

“Honestly, it's the best thing that ever happened to me, being gay. It's made my career.”

In the upcoming feature film The Pass, Tovey plays a soccer player struggling with his sexuality after kissing another player.

Tovey also recently joined the cast of ABC's Quantico, in which he plays a mysterious gay man.
