Broadway diva Kristin Chenoweth has a
message for religious people who oppose LGBT rights.
The 48-year-old Chenoweth plays Velma
Von Tussle, a segregationist, in NBC's upcoming Hairspray Live!
Tussle changes her views on race relations by the end of the show.
At a recent press junket for the
production, Chenoweth was asked whether she felt a responsibility to
her LGBT fans in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump's election
and the recent wave of hate crimes.
“It's interesting being a person –
not to get weird – but a person of faith, a woman in show business
in the 21st century,” Chenoweth told gay glossy The
Advocate. “God is love, and it seems like the opposite of
that happens a lot, instead of acceptance and love. … Not tolerance
– acceptance, that's my message.”
Hairspray Live! debuts December
7 on NBC.
