Retailer American Apparel is selling
“Make America Gay Again” and “Make America LGBTQ Again”
t-shirts.
The slogans are clearly inspired by
Donald Trump's “Make America Great Again” hat.
Thirty percent of American Apparel's
sales of the shirts will go to support efforts to pass the Equality
Act, a federal bill introduced last year that would prohibit
discrimination in several key areas based on sexual orientation and
gender identity.
The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) will
also sell the shirts at its online store.
HRC and The Ally Coalition (TAC) are
partners in the campaign.
“We are excited about our partnership
with The Ally Coalition and American Apparel, which empowers people
to subvert the politics of hate and division by creatively speaking
out for the equal rights and dignity of LGBTQ people,” said Olivia
Alair Dalton, senior vice president of communications and marketing
at HRC.
According to HRC, the
#MakeAmericaGayAgain, #MakeAmericanLGBTQAgain campaign will “share
personal stories and videos to educate audiences about LGBTQ equality
and work to increase acceptance.”
