Conservative radio host Mike Gallagher
of The Mike Gallagher Show suggested Tuesday that a recent
Calif. decision protecting gay rights is a victory for pedophiles in
the state.
Mike Gallagher was discussing Monday's
California Supreme Court decision that bars doctors from invoking
their religious beliefs to deny treatment to gays and lesbians. The
case involved a lesbian, Guadalupe Benitez of Oceanside, California,
who said doctors refused to inseminate her because their religious
convictions conflicted with her homosexuality.
On Tuesday's show a caller asked if the
court's decision was a victory for pedophile adoptions.
Caller: “The question I had told your
screener, I said, if I'm understanding, California said because of
sexual orientation they can't deny you service, so does that mean
pedophiles could adopt?”
Mike Gallagher agreed with the caller,
saying: “Well that's just, that's a great question. I mean, if you
work in an adoption agency and a guy comes in saying, 'I like girls
and I want to adopt a nine-year-old girl and I'm going to probably
sleep with her while I'm at it', could the adoption agency person
say, 'Well, excuse me, my religious beliefs find that, lead me to
find that repugnant, I'm not going to do it.' Can he then turn
around and sue the adoption agency and win, like the lesbian did?”
“In California, it sounds like you
can,” the caller responded.
“In California, I think you can do a
bit of everything. I'm starting to think the California Supreme Court
lets just about anything go,” Gallagher added.
But, as Think Progress points
out, sexual contact with a minor under the age of 18 is illegal in
California. In fact, since 2006 Proposition 83 bans all convicted
sex offenders from living 2,000 feet of a school or park and requires
electronic monitoring for life.
