Singer-songwriter David Bowie has died,
according to a statement posted on his Facebook page.
“January 10, 2016 – David Bowie
died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18
month battle with cancer,” the statement reads. “While many of
you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's
privacy during their time of grief.”
The 69-year-old Bowie released a new
album, Blackstar, on Friday. A
video for the title track came out last month. Blackstar
was Bowie's 25th album.
The openly bisexual Bowie rose to fame
during the glam rock era of the 70s. His short-lived alter ego Ziggy
Stardust was a flamboyant, androgynous character that heavily
influenced the music scene. Bowie was inducted into the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame in 1996.
Bowie is survived by his wife Iman,
daughter Alexandria Jones and son Duncan Jones from his first
marriage to Angie Bowie.
