Police in Philadelphia are investigating the death of Keisha Jenkins, a 22-year-old transgender woman who was beaten and shot to death by a group of men.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) believes that Jenkins is the 20th transgender woman killed in the United States this year, and the 18th transgender woman of color.

Police believe five or six men were involved in Jenkins' attack, which occurred early Tuesday around 2:30 AM near Hunting Park. One of the men fired two shots into Jenkins' back.

She was pronounced dead at 2:53 AM at the Einstein Medical Center.

On Wednesday, Philadelphia Police Captain James Clark said that he does not believe the murder was a hate crime, ABC News reported.

“We believe five or six males saw the victim, thought she had money, assaulted her and ultimately killed her. But we believe it was a robbery,” Clark said.

Police said that Jenkins, a prostitute who worked in the area, was known as a high earner.
