Producers of the upcoming film Carol this week released the movie's first trailer

Cate Blanchett stars opposite Rooney Mara in Carol.

Based on Patricia Highsmith's (under the pseudonym Claire Morgan) 1952 novel The Price of Salt, the film – set in 1950s New York – revolves around department-store clerk Therese (played by Mara) as she falls for Carol, an older, married woman (Blanchett).

A key scene from the trailer involves Carol informing Therese that her husband will keep her from seeing her daughter if she leaves him.

“We gave each other the most breathtaking of gifts,” Carol tells Therese. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)

Carol premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and opens in theaters November 20.
