Taye Diggs on Wednesday will take over
the role of Hedwig on Broadway.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells
the story of a transgender rock musician's search for “my other
half.”
Darren Criss, who is best known for
playing gay student Blaine Anderson on the Fox musical-comedy Glee,
ends his 12-week engagement and Diggs will debut as Hedwig on July
22, making him the show's first African-American lead.
Diggs' Broadway credentials include
roles in Rent, Wicked and Chicago.
“I'm going to bring a little
chocolate to it – mix it up,” Diggs recently said during an
appearance on HuffPost Live.
He added that he thinks “Broadway is
far more liberal and a lot less concerned with race.”
“I think theatergoers themselves are
a little bit more liberal than your average moviegoer,” Diggs said.
