Tony Perkins, president of the
Christian conservative Family Research Council (FRC), has claimed
that President Barack Obama is attempting to “eliminate”
Christianity through his support for LGBT rights.
In a fundrasing letter, Perkins asked
supporters to contribute to his organization “before it is
literally too late.”
“[S]ame-sex 'marriage' is not the
ultimate issue,” Perkins
said in the email, a reference to Friday's Supreme Court ruling
striking down state bans on gay marriage. “It is a stepping-stone.
The real issue is the Obama administration's dogged determination to
eliminate anything and everything that stands in the way of the
President's radical agenda. Silence is dissent. And to do that, you
punish speech – and belief.”
“Orthodox Christianity's truth
doesn't change, and as long as we remain tethered to this
transcendent, unchangeable truth, we are a problem for them. If you
can't change it, you must eliminate it. Which is what they are
seeking to do.”
“With the Supreme Court ruling to
redefine marriage, things are going to get rough for Christians in
America,” he added.
In an interview with Philip Klein of
the Washington
Examiner, Perkins claimed that gays “have always been able
to do what they want in the privacy of their own homes.”
In fact, it was as recently as 2003
that the Supreme Court struck down sodomy laws in 14 states in
Lawrence v. Texas.
