Tony Perkins, president of the
Christian conservative Family Research Council (FRC), has called
Apple CEO Tim Cook's sexuality “irrelevant” as he threatens to
boycott Apple.
Last week, Cook acknowledged that he's
gay, making him the first openly gay CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
“This may surprise liberals,” said
Perkins, an ardent opponent of LGBT rights, “but as far as I'm
concerned, Cook's sexuality is irrelevant.”
“It only becomes an issue when
homosexuals make it one – and use their businesses as a platform
for radical activism.”
Perkins added that his group wants
companies not to get involved in “cultural battles.”
“All too often, we get angry at the
culture but don't do anything about it,” he said. “Being
conscious of where your dollars are going is a small thing that can
have a big impact. Regardless of political correctness, money talks.
And believe me, corporate America is listening.”
Perkins linked his press release to the
website of Faith Driven Consumer, which describes itself as
“Christians who choose to live out our faith in every arena of life
– including the marketplace.”
