Michael Sam, the NFL's first openly gay player, is among the athletes helping increase awareness for the first international study on homophobia in sports.

“Please take this survey to fight homophobia in sports at OutOnTheFields.com,” the 24-year-old Sam says in a 90-second video for the survey. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)

The study, which was commissioned by organizers of The Bingham Cup, the world cup of gay rugby, is being conducted by sports research firm Repucom in consultation with researchers from 6 universities.

Also appearing in the video are British-born rugby stars Sam and Tom Burgess, soccer player Sarah Walsh, rugby player David Pocock and Australian football star Brock McLean

In 2011, Pocock made headlines around the world when he pledged not to marry his fiancee until gay and lesbian couples are allowed to marry in Australia.
