San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Leonard Davis believes the NFL will be the first professional sports league to have a major athlete come out gay.

The 30-year-old Davis, who is considered one of the top tight ends in the NFL, predicted we are 5 or 6 years away from a major professional athlete coming out.

“I think within the next 5 to 6 years you'll see a lot of gay guys come out into the world of sports,” Davis said during an appearance on Larry King Now.

“Will the NFL be the last place?” host Larry King asked.

“I think the NFL will be the first place.”

“Really? Before baseball or basketball? One basketball player came out but nobody signed him,” King said, a reference to Jason Collins. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)
