A 15-year-old teen with two moms has
reportedly asked Apple to change its definition of the word “gay.”
Becca Gorman of Sudbury, Massachusetts
was shocked to find terms such as “foolish” and “stupid”
included in her Macbook laptop's dictionary for the word “gay.”
“Making students wait for the light is kind of a gay rule,” was
an included example.
“I think my initial reaction was just
disbelief,” Gorman told MyFoxBoston.com. “I was kind of
disgusted.”
Gorman wrote to Apple CEO Tim Cook.
“I assume that you are a pro-gay
company, and would never intend for any one of your products to be as
offensive as this definition was,” she wrote. “Even with your
addition of the word 'informal,' this definition normalizes the
terrible derogatory twist that many people put on the word 'gay.'”
Gorman said that the company was
“really surprised” to hear that their definition included the
terms.
“They said that Apple streams its
dictionary from four separate sources, so they'd have to figure out
how to get it removed,” she
told the news outlet.
