Mariela Castro, daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro and niece
of Fidel Castro, says marriage is not a priority for gay couples in
Last year, Castro introduced a proposal to legalize civil unions
for gay couples. The measure has yet to reach the National Assembly.
“The vast majority of gay and lesbian people are interested in
the legalization of consensual unions to have economic rights, that
is what really affects them, because in Cuba the majority of straight
people do not get married. Not a priority,” Castro said in an
interview with Spanish
news agency AFP.
She added that her measure would provide “options” for gay
couples similar to those available to straight couples.
Castro made her comments as she attended a regional conference on
Latin American population and development held in Montevideo, Uruguay.
