Callie Thorne, the star of USA Network's Necessary Roughness,
says she loved the coming out gay storyline which ended the show's
second season.
In the show's season finale, New York Hawks star quarterback Rex
Evans (played by Travis Smith) came out gay to his teammates and
fans.
Appearing on HuffPost Live, Thorne, who plays Dr. Danielle
“Dani” Santino, the team's therapist, called the storyline
“beautiful.”
“We were a little bit ahead of the curve and it was very
exciting,” Thorne said, referring to the recent self-outings of
professional athletes Jason Collins and Robbie Rogers.
“No matter how nervous certain people may have been about that
storyline and presenting it to our audiences, USA was very brave, I
think, in letting us tell that story. And I think our writers and
creators did it really quite beautifully. And it was beautiful to
then see it happen in real life and to see how people were responding
to that kind of thing and feel like maybe we were part of that
conversation, a little, just a little bit, you know.” (The video
