Neil Patrick Harris returns to Broadway
next year in a production of the rock musical Hedwig and the Angry
Inch.
The first Broadway production of the
John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask musical will be directed by
Tony winner Michael Mayer and produced by David Binder,
BroadwayWorld.com
reported.
“I am simultaneously ecstatic and
terrified to be stepping into Hedwig's heels,” Harris said. “It
is truly a once-in-a-lifetime role and I can't wait to begin the
journey.”
Hedwig, which had a long
off-Broadway run at New York City's Jane Street Theater and was later
turned into a movie in 2001 starring Cameron Mitchell in the title
role, tells the story of a transgender rock musician's search for “my
other half.”
“Who better to pass the wig to but
the finest entertainer of his generation?” Cameron Mitchell asked
rhetorically.
Trask agreed, saying that it was “like
you're putting together a fantasy rock band and Paul McCartney agrees
to play bass.”
While a theater has yet to be
announced, Hedwig is expected to open on Broadway in spring
2014.
