Noah Syndergaard, the recently acquired
pitcher for the New York Mets, has apologized for using an anti-gay
slur on Twitter.
The 20-year-old Syndergaard on December
9 tweeted: “@Dmarze89 nice crocs fag lol.”
The message has since been deleted.
“I had a little mishap on Twitter
about a month ago,” Syndergaard told reporters during a conference
call to introduce him, “and it was just brought to my attention
this morning.”
“I'd just like to apologize for
anything that was said. A buddy and I were having a little
conversation. I had a poor attempt at humor and an even worse
attempt at using a term I shouldn't have used. I hope I didn't
offend anybody. I'm really sorry my first introduction to being a
New York Met had to be like this,” he
added.
Dmarze89 is a protected account under
the name Dayton Marze. A picture of a young bearded man dressed in
hunting gear graces his profile, which reads: “God, family,
friends, huntin, fishin and baseball Louisiana.”
Syndergaard was rated Toronto Blue
Jay's top pitching prospect by Baseball America.
