Singer Ricky Martin has criticized Miss
Peru Cindy Mejia's anti-gay views.
The recently crowned Mejia made some
controversial comments about gay children during an interview with
Peru21.
When asked, “Would you have a problem
if your child turned out to be gay?” Mejia answered: “In my
case, the day that God permits me to have children, it wouldn't
happen because these things happen because a child grew up without a
father or was molested or lived with his mother and sisters and the
mannerisms started, or I don't know.”
“I'm not an expert on the subject.
The day I have my children I will entrust them to God completely,
will raise them with care with a father and a mother and support them
completely, because there should always be communication.”
Mejia at first claimed that she had
been misquoted, saying there was no reason she would make such a
statement, but later apologized after the
publication posted audio of her comments.
“Due to my lack of knowledge on this
topic, I made an error and it won't happen again. I apologize if
these comments contributed to discrimination or violence against the
LGBT community. Therefore, I pledge to fight against homophobia and
sexism in my role as a representative of Peruvian beauty,” she
said.
Martin, who came out gay in 2010 and is
raising twin boys, tweeted in Spanish: “What a shame, and such
foolish comments. #ignorance.”
