Singer Chely Wright has said dating Brad Paisley and other men to hide that she was gay was “cruel.”

The 41-year-old Wright appeared on CBS' This Morning to pitch the opening of her coming out documentary Wish Me Away, which opens in New York on Friday. The film will also be available starting Friday on iTunes and other VOD sites.

Co-host Gayle King said, “Your documentary took my heart and ripped it out a couple of times,” before asking Wright: “You seem to have regrets about how you handled [dating Brad Paisley]. Do you have regrets and have you made amends with him?”

“I had several relationships with several wonderful men. I'm a good picker. I pick some nice guys to date. Some of the best. And I do regret those men that I dated that I could never reciprocate the love and affection that they had for me. I knew it the entire time, that I couldn't. And there's a particular cruelty in that.”

“He is a good person but I was too afraid to tell him,” she added. (Watch the entire segment at CBS.)

Wright, who married her wife Lauren Blitzer-Wright in Connecticut last year, earlier this year opened her Like Me non-profit's first gay community center in Kansas City.
