Which gays were googled the most in
2011? According to gay glossy The
Advocate, they are singers Ricky Martin and Elton John.
Martin, who turned 40 on Saturday,
squeaked by Sir Elton for the coveted top spot of the most
searched-for openly gay personality on Google.
The Livin' la Vida Loca singer
came out gay last year in his memoir Me. Last month, the
Spanish government announced that it had granted citizenship to the
Puerto Rican singer, ostensibly
so he could marry boyfriend Carlos Gonzalez, though Martin has
not announced any plans.
Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton dropped
from last year's first place finish to become the third most googled
gay of the year.
Fashion designer Marc Jacobs ranks
fourth on the list, just ahead of fifth place finisher Adam Lambert.
Rounding out the top ten are:
television host Ellen DeGeneres (6), singer George Michael (7) actor
Neil Patrick Harris (8), fashion designer Alexander McQueen (9) and
gay rights activist Dan Choi (10).
Glee co-stars Jane Lynch (16)
and Chris Colfer (14) also rank in the top 20. Recently
out actor Zachary Quinto is the 20th most googled gay
of 2011.
