Actress Amber Heard has said she came out lesbian because remaining in the closet is destructive.

The 25-year-old actress created a stir last year when she walked the red carpet at an event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) in Los Angeles with her girlfriend of nearly three years, photographer Tasya Van Ree.

Heard, who starred in NBC's short-lived drama The Playboy Club and opposite Johnny Depp in the film The Rum Diary, suggested during a cover interview with women's glossy Women's Health that closeted actors should come out.

“You can't respect yourself if you're afraid to be who you are,” she is quoted as saying by The New York Post. “It requries bravery to do something no on else around you is doing. But the risk was outweighed by the possibility of playing into this horribly detrimental lie that some in Hollywood perpetuate.”

In an earlier interview with Playboy, Heard said marriage wasn't for her: “It is an important issue, and I'm fighting for the right to get married. For other people.”
