Chely Wright has said her mother
rejected her after she came out gay.
The 41-year-old Wright made her
comments during an appearance Tuesday on HLN's
The Joy Behar Show.
The country music star told host Joy
Behar that her mother learned that she was gay from watching a
television broadcast.
“About 10 days after I came out, she
must have seen your show, because she called me and said, 'So, you're
gay?' And I said, 'Yeah.' And we had about a two hour conversation
about it,” Wright said.
“It was very non-affirming. And very
painful.”
Wright stated that religion “tells
her she need to reject me.”
“She thinks I have a price to pay
with God,” she said.
Wright, who came out gay last year and
married
her wife in Connecticut earlier this year, added that her
mother's reaction affirmed her decision to come out of the closet.
“Although I had a very tough day the
day my mom rejected me, it really kind of made me re-commit to why I
came out publicly. I came out because what if a kid had gotten the
nerve to tell his mom.”
“I can't stand the thought of his
only reaction from a parent being what my mother's was,” Wright
said.
