Jessica Capshaw, who plays lesbian Arizona Robbins on the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy, has defended her role.

Last season on the Thursday night hit show, Capshaw's Arizona and Callie Torres (played by Sara Ramirez) tied the knot while wearing white gowns during an outdoor ceremony.

When freelance journalist Alice Clarke suggested that Capshaw's role as a lesbian was influencing her real life, the 34-year-old actress defended herself.

“@JessicaCapshaw you know you've been playing a lesbian too long when you turn vego,” Clarke tweeted on Monday. “Just try to keep off the flannel, it's a slippery slope.”

“@Alicedkc #Stereotype-free Tuesdays tomorrow! Hope you can join,” Capshaw replied.

“@JessicaCapshaw well played! Hey, I'm a proud member of the lesbian stereotype (aside from the vego thing),” Clarke messaged back. “Flannel is surprisingly comfy.”

In reporting the story, lesbian entertainment website AfterEllen.com noted that they were uncertain of Clarke's motives: “Now, I'm not sure what Clarke's sexual orientation is (she does follow [openly gay celebrities] Tegan & Sara and Rachel Maddow on Twitter) or if she was just trying to be playful.”
