The Chicago Cubs will become the second
MLB team after
the San Francisco Giants to reach out to troubled LGBT teens by
recording an It Gets Better video, the
Chicago edition of GoPride.com reported.
The
It Gets Better Project begun by gay activist Dan Savage has
received enormous support from Hollywood, the business community and
leading Democrats, including President Barack Obama. The campaign
encourages gay teens to not cave in to bullies, because life
eventually gets better.
The team announced on Friday that
filming will begin after the team returns to Wrigley Field from its
current road trip.
“The Cubs applaud the Giants for
their stand against anti-LGBT bullying. Bullying of anyone for any
reason is unacceptable,” said Cubs owner and board member Laura
Ricketts. “We are proud to join the Giants in taking a stand
against bullying and encourage other professional sports
organizations to do the same.”
Ricketts made history in 2009 when she
became the
first openly gay Major League Baseball owner.
The videos come after Phoenix
Suns CEO Rick Welts told The
New York Times
that he's gay. Welts told the paper that his decision to come
out was driven in part by a desire to help youth who may be
struggling with their sexuality.
