On the red carpet at Saturday's White
House Correspondents' Dinner, Glee co-star Jane Lynch said she
believes President Barack Obama supports her decision to marry her
wife Laura Embry.
The president has said he supports
government recognition of gay and lesbian couples but marriage should
remain a heterosexual union.
Over the past nine months, however,
Obama has signaled he's reconsidering his position.
In October of last year, he told gay
blogger Joe Sudbay of Americablog.com that gay marriage was an issue
“I think a lot about.”
“Attitudes evolve,” he said.
“Including mine.”
Before he signed repeal of “Don't
Ask, Don't Tell” in December, the
president added that he was still “wrestling” with and “evolving”
on the issue.
Lynch, who
married Embry in Massachusetts, the first state to legalize gay
marriage, last June, said she would be delighted to meet the
president, and added that she believes he supports her right to marry
the woman she loves.
“People in politics say what they
think they have to say. But I think Barack Obama is a good person
and likes the fact that she and I are married,” Lynch
told ABC News, referring to Embry.
“Yeah,” Embry agreed. “He seems
like a smart man.”
