During a Monday stop in early caucus
state Iowa, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann explained that
God had told her to sponsor an amendment to the Minnesota
Constitution outlawing gay marriage.
At the event, sponsored by Bob Vander
Plaats' Christian conservative group The Family Leader, Bachmann, who
has yet to declare her candidacy for the 2012 GOP presidential
nomination, reminded attendees at the group's most recent
presidential lecture series installment that she opposes gay
marriage.
The Republican as a state senator twice
spearheaded unsuccessful efforts in Minnesota to constitutionally ban
gay marriage.
Bachmann
said she was “devastated” by the 2003 Massachusetts Supreme Court
decision that legalized the institution in that state.
“When that happened, I heard the news
on my local Christian radio station in Minneapolis-St. Paul and I was
devastated,” she said. “And I took a walk and I just went to
prayer and I said, 'Lord, what would you have me do in the Minnesota
state Senate?' And just through prayer I knew that I was to
introduce the marriage amendment in Minnesota.”
Last month, Bachmann
thanked Iowa voters for ousting three state Supreme Court justices
who favored gay marriage.
