Real estate mogul Donald Trump opposes
all forms of legal recognition for gay and lesbian couples, not just
marriage.
Last month, the 64-year-old CEO of
Trump Organization and host of the NBC reality show The Apprentice
told Fox News' Greta Van Susteren that he's opposed to abortion
rights and gay marriage.
“New York is a place with lots of
gays, and I think it's great,” Trump said. “But I'm not in favor
of gay marriage.”
Trump's
comments came four days after he appeared at the Conservative
Political Action Conference (CPAC) at the request of gay GOP
group GOProud, whose
co-sponsorship of the event sparked a boycott by social
conservatives.
GOProud asked Trump to address the
crowd and organized a failed write-in campaign for the billionaire
celebrity.
At CPAC, Trump said he is considering a
run for president as a Republican.
In
a Thursday interview with the Des Moines Register, Trump
added that he opposes all forms of legal recognition for gay couples,
not just marriage.
“They should not be able to marry,”
he said.
“Trump said on marriage and civil
benefits, 'As of this moment, I would say no and no,'” the paper
reported.
