The Uganda newspaper Rolling Stone
on Monday published the names and photos of 10 more alleged gay men,
CNN reported.
The paper's cover story Men of Shame
Part II follows the publication of a story that featured photos
and addresses of the country's top gay men and lesbians alongside a
yellow banner that read “hang them.”
“A cross-section of heartless
homosexuals is seriously recruiting and brainwashing unsuspecting
kids into gay circles,” Editor Giles Muhame wrote in Monday's
article.
Being gay in Uganda is a criminal
offense punishable by life imprisonment in some instances.
The paper's first list resulted in
attacks on at least four people, gay rights groups in the country
say.
A controversial anti-gay bill thought
to have been shelved remains viable, its sponsor told CNN.
Lawmaker David Bahati's bill includes a
death penalty provision for people who repeatedly engage in gay sex
and those who are HIV-positive. The bill also bans the “promotion
of homosexuality,” which would effectively outlaw political
organizations, broadcasters and publishers that advocate on behalf of
gay rights.
“We are very confident,” Bahati
said about passage of the bill, “because this is a piece of
legislation that is needed in this country to protect the traditional
family here in Africa, and also protect the future of our children.”
