Reality stars Alex McCord and Sonja
Morgan joined politicians on Sunday at the Seventh NYC Marriage
Equality Wedding March.
The event brings together celebrities
and politicians to urge New Yorkers to support the legalization of
gay marriage with a “wedding march” across the Brooklyn Bridge.
An estimated 300 supporters gathered on Foley Square before marching.
Real Housewives of New York City
stars McCord and Morgan joined U.S. Representative Jerrold Nadler,
and various New York City politicians, including City Council Speaker
Christine Quinn and Council Members Daniel Dromm, Letitia James and
Jimmy Van Bramer, at the rally.
“Marriage equality is not a matter of
if in this country, it's a matter of when,” Nadler told the crowd.
“The love, families and relationships
of all New Yorkers deserve to be treated equally under the law,”
Brian Silva, events director of Marriage Equality New York, the lead
organizer of the event, said.
While a bill that would have legalized
gay marriage in New York died in the Senate last year, governor David
Paterson personally campaigned for its passage and Assembly members
approved the legislation.
Activists continue to target senators
who voted against the bill. Two of their marks – Bill Stachowski
and Hiram Monserrate – have been ousted.
