A lesbian couple on Friday exchanged
vows in Puerto Rico, becoming the first gay couple to marry in the
U.S. territory since the Supreme Court struck down gay marriage bans
in all 50 states.
According to El
Nuevo Dia, writers Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro and Zulma Oliveras
Vega wed during a private ceremony held at restaurant Art D'Chocolat.
The eatery closed for the wedding and tight security was visible.
Roughly 150 guests helped the women
celebrate.
The writer Mayra Santos Febres and
singer Choco Orta were among those who attended.
“It's an honor to be here,” Orta
said. “It is gratifying that people come together in love. I am
thrilled by the fact that my friends will join to have the same
rights that all human beings should have.”
Orta recently
said that she plans to marry her partner.
