The Cleveland City Council has
approved a resolution supporting marriage equality in Ohio.
The resolution was favored by 14 of the
council's 16 members.
Councilman Joe Cimperman spoke in favor
of passage.
“We're a city that recently held the
Gay Games,” Cimperman told colleagues, “and showed everyone
across the planet, from Paris to Zurich to San Francisco, why we're a
welcoming city. This resolution follows in line with that, in terms
of our social justice heritage.”
Other Ohio cities which have approved
similar non-binding resolutions include Cincinnati, Columbus and
Athens.
In November, the Sixth Circuit Court of
Appeals in Cincinnati overturned a lower court's ruling striking down
Ohio's restrictive marriage ban as unconstitutional. Plaintiffs
appealed to the Supreme Court, which will hear the case Tuesday, with
a ruling expected in June.
