Republican Wisconsin Governor Scott
Walker told reporters on Saturday that he has attended the same-sex
wedding reception of a relative.
At the end of a GOP Summit in New
Hampshire, Walker was asked whether he would attend the same-sex
wedding of a loved one, despite his opposition to marriage equality.
“That's certainly a personal issue.
Tonette and I and our family already had a family member who's had a
reception,” Walker said.
Walkers' then-19-year-old son, Alex
Walker, was one of the two adult witnesses to the June 9, 2014
wedding of Shelli Marquardt and Cathy Priem. Marquardt is the first
cousin of Walker's wife, Tonette. Walker said that he was unable to
attend the wedding.
“I haven't been to a wedding. That's
true even though my position on marriage is still that's defined
between a man and a woman, and I support the Constitution of the
state. But for someone I love, we've been at a reception,” he
said.
Other announced and possible Republican
presidential candidates have been asked the same question recently.
On Sunday, Ohio Governor John Kasich said that he has plans to attend
the same-sex wedding of a friend. Florida Senator Marco
Rubio said that he would attend such a wedding. However, former
Pennsylvania Senator Rick
Santorum said that attending such a ceremony would be a “violation
of his faith.”
