Christian conservative celebrity David
Benham recently claimed that a kind gesture on his part convinced a
gay man to “walk away from his lifestyle.”
Last year, HGTV decided against moving
forward with a reality series already in production starring David
and his twin brother Jason. While the network has not discussed its
reasons, it acted less than 24 hours after Right Wing Watch issued a
report on the brothers' anti-gay activism.
Both recently spoke at the National
Religious Broadcasters convention, where David Benham discussed an
interaction he had with an unidentified gay man.
“We had so many people from the gay
community reaching out to us and one man in particular from the city
of Chicago reached out – and he said things to me that made me lose
my appetite. But I simply responded in love.”
“After a little conversation back and
forth, I found out he loved baseball … and I got him tickets to a
Cubs game.”
He
continued, “He shot me a Facebook post and said, 'I was not
expecting that – and I've been thinking a lot about this. I've
chosen to walk away from my lifestyle.'”
David
Benham recently described a proposed LGBT protections bill in
Charlotte, North Carolina as “depraved” and “just absolutely
crazy.”
