A documentary on the life of out actor
George Takei opens in limited theaters, on iTunes and other on demand
sites on Friday.
To Be Takei premiered to wide
acclaim at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
The film, directed by Jennifer Kroot
(It Came From Kuchar), takes a look at Takei's journey from
spending part of his childhood in a World War II internment camp to
manning the helm of the Starship Enterprise. After publicly coming
out gay in 2005, Takei married his partner Brad Altman in California
and went on to become an LGBT rights advocate.
Star
Trek co-stars appearing in the film include William
Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig.
The film ran exclusively on DIRECTV
through August 5.
