Tyler Glenn, the recently out frontman
for the Utah-based alternative rock band Neon Trees, says he knew he
was gay since he was 3 but kept it to himself until recently.
Glenn came out in April, tweeting to
his followers: “Yes. I am a happy and healthy Mormon gay pop star.
I don't know what it all means, but I'm ok with it.”
In a video clip for the upcoming
documentary Far Between, which takes a look at LGBT Mormons,
Glenn said that growing up Mormon left him fearful to explore his
sexuality.
In the video, Glenn describes coming
out to his producer.
“It was the very first time anyone
had given me a positive reaction to anything regarding being gay.
And there was even like a tone of excitement, like, I'm so excited
for you. That blew my mind that that could be something you should
be happy about, like it was always something that I needed to be
afraid of, or that I needed to keep hidden, or that I needed to laugh
about and, you know, sort of joke about. But it was never something
that I could actually do.”
“Now it's just really refreshing to
be able to say I love God,” he later added. “I don't know all
the answers but I also know this is who I am. This is how I feel.”
