Wendy Davis, the likely Democratic
nominee for Texas governor, told a local newspaper's editorial board
that she supports allowing gay couples to marry.
“It's my strong belief that when
people love each other and are desirous of creating a committed
relationship with each other that they should be allowed to marry,
regardless of their sexual orientation,” Davis, a state senator,
told the San
Antonio Express-News editorial board.
Davis stated that she was pleased that
Texas' ban is under challenge in federal court and called on Attorney
General Greg Abbott, a Republican, to stop defending the ban.

“I think that what we see happening
at the federal level in terms of constitutional interpretations on
that provide some hope that it may be found unconstitutional,” she
said.
Davis pledged to back repeal of the ban
if elected governor: “I think it is time to re-open that
conversation and ask Texans where they are on it to see if that's
something that we might change legislatively if it doesn't happen
