Actress Goldie Hawn has denounced
Nigeria's anti-gay law.
In an HuffPost Live appearance, Hawn
apologized for tweeting a photo of herself with Nigerian President
Goodluck Jonathan along with the caption “Met the wonderful
President of Nigeria @JGoodlucktweets today in #Davos @wef.”
Hawn explained that she was unaware
that Jonathan recently signed a law that prohibits the state from
recognizing the relationships of gay couples, mandates a 14-year
prison sentence for anyone who enter a same-sex marriage or civil
union, prohibits the public promotion of gay rights and outlaws gay
clubs and organizations.
“I must admit that, you know, I'm not
tuned in to Nigeria,” Hawn said. “You know, my head's down
looking at things I'm doing, no excuse. However, when I discovered
it, I was absolutely appalled.”
“I have been supporting [gay rights]
for many, many years.”
“It's so horrible. I mean it really
feels like we've gone into the Dark Ages over there,” Hawn said of
the law. “It's barbaric.”
“When you see this kind of behavior,
this horror that's going on there, it breaks my heart, because I have
my own personal feelings about this as I think a lot of us do. This
is inhumanity. This is man's inhumanity to man of the first order,”
she added. (The video is embedded on this page. Visit
