The Albuquerque Teacher's Federation
(ATF) has unanimously endorsed gay marriage in New Mexico.
ATF on Thursday approved a resolution
to endorse and join New Mexico Unites for Marriage, the campaign to
defend marriage equality in New Mexico.
“We are thrilled to be a part of New
Mexico Unites for Marriage,” said ATF President Ellen Bernstein.
“As a union, one of the things we focus on is discrimination of all
kinds and we are inclusive of the members of our union, their
families and our society at large. The New Mexico's Supreme Court's
recent ruling is the right action as our state can now move forward
and support and honor all couples and families.”
A New Mexico Supreme Court decision
handed down last month moved New Mexico into the marriage equality
column. However, proposed legislation threatens the court's
decision.
New Mexico Unites for Marriage is
lobbying lawmakers to reject the proposed constitutional amendment
which seeks to define marriage as a heterosexual union.
ATF claims 3,800 members and is part of
the American Federation of Teachers.
