A Christian conservative has suggested that New Jersey Governor
Chris Christie's recent signing of a bill banning “ex-gay”
therapy to minors is tantamount to endorsing adultery.
Christie, a Republican who previously vetoed a gay marriage law
approved by lawmakers, signed the bill last week, making New Jersey
the second state after California to prohibit so-called conversion
therapy that attempts to turn gay teens straight.
In a signing note accompanying the bill, Christie, a Catholic,
said that he does not believe being gay is a choice or a sin.
Tom Minnery, head of Focus on the Family's political arm
CitizenLink, and Stuart Shepard, CitizenLink's senior director of
media, criticized Christie for signing the bill.
“As society prides itself on putting homosexuality on a
pedestal, you can see how more and more young people might think they
are gay, might think they are lesbian,” Minnery said. “But what
they are probably is just confused and need precisely the kind of
help that the governor by signing this law says they cannot have, and
that's a tragedy.”
Shepard
urged reporters to ask Christie: “If immorality is okay, are
you okay with adultery?”
“Is that what you're saying? What sins are in, which ones are
out, Governor Christie?”
“Someone ought to ask that question of his wife. What about
