In reporting that Washington state
voters had upheld a gay marriage law, Fox's Shepard Smith called the
news a “victory for civil rights.”
During the Thursday, November 8 edition
of Fox News' Fox Report, Smith deviated from the conservative
network's general opposition to gay rights.
“A victory for civil rights today,
the latest returns show that Washington state voters have narrowly
approved a law that legalizes same-sex marriage,” Smith
reported. “Today, opponents conceded.”
It's not he first time Smith has shown
support for the issue, and he's not the only Fox contributor to do
In May, Smith praised President Barack
Obama's endorsement of marriage equality, telling viewers that the
president is “now in the 21st century.”
Other Fox News personalities who
support the institution include Andrew Napolitano, Greg Gutfeld, Lou
Dobbs and John Stossel.
In fact, Stossel and nationally
syndicated columnist David Harsanyi ganged up on Brian Brown, the
president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), the
nation's leading opponent of marriage equality, during
an appearance last year on Fox Business Network's Stossel.
